What do I need to go to Machu Picchu on my own?

If you don't want to book with an agency, these are the steps to follow:

1. Check for availability on your travel dates, go to the governmet's website, on the left side of the screen you can choose what you want to do: only Machu Picchu, Machu Picchu & Huayna Picchu (1G or 2G, these are the schedules to start hiking the Huayna Picchu), Machu Picchu + Museum or Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Mountain.

2. If you want to do Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Mountain or Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu, we recommend you to arrive the day before to Aguas Calientes, this way you will be rested and fully enjoy the experience.

3. Once you have your entrance tickets to Machu Picchu (to see the prices, you can go to our post "Tickets to Machu Picchu), buy your train tickets, major companies are: PeruRail & IncaRail. The advantage of one over the other is that PeruRail has departures to/form Poroy - Cusco and Ollantaytambo, which means more options! whereas IncaRail has departures just to/from Ollantaytambo.

4. Once you purchased your train tickets, check if they depart from Poroy - Cusco or Ollantaytambo. To go to the train station you will ned to take a taxi, the prices are: to Poroy - Cusco 25-30 nuevos soles approx (USD 10-12) and Ollantaytambo 100-130 nuevos soles approx (USD 40-52).

5. The train will arrive to Aguas Calientes, from where you will have to either walk or take the bus up to The Citadel of Machu Picchu; you can buy just one way or a round trip ticket.

6. Check the time you will arrive to Poroy - Cusco or Ollantaytambo Station,and arrange some transportation back to the Historic Center - Cusco, you can talk to the taxi driver that took you in first place.

¿Que necesito para ir a Machu Picchu por mi cuenta?

Si no quieres realizar tu viaje con una agencia y quieres ir por tu cuenta, estos son los pasos que debes seguir:

1. Verifica disponibilidad de entradas, entra a la página del gobierno, en el lado izquierdo de la pantalla puedes escoger cual es la ruta que piensas hacer: solo Machu Picchu, Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu (1G ó 2G, estos son los horarios en los que deseas escalar el Huayna Picchu), Machu Picchu + Museo de Sitio ó Machu Picchu + Machu Picchu Montaña.

2. Si escoges hacer Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu ó + Machu Picchu montaña, te recomendamos pernoctar el día anterior en Aguas Calientes, de esta manera estarás más descansado y podrás disfrutar al máximo de la experiencia.

3. Una vez que tengas tus entradas a Machu Picchu (para ver los precios, puedes entrar a nuestra publicación "Entradas a Machu Picchu), compra tus boletos de tren, las compañias principales son: PeruRail e IncaRail. La ventaja de la una sobre la otra es que PeruRail tiene salidas desde y hasta Cusco, así como desde y hasta Ollantaytambo ¡por lo tanto más opciones!; mientras que IncaRail solo tiene salidas desde y hasta Ollantaytambo.

4. Según los boletos de tren que hayas comprado, verifica si es que partes desde la estación de Ollantaytambo o de Poroy - Cusco. Para ambas estaciones necesitarás tomar taxi desde el centro histórico - Cusco, los precios son: a Poroy 25 - 30 nuevos soles aprox (USD 10 - 12)y a Ollantaytambo 100 - 130 nuevos soles aprox (USD 40 - 52).

5. El tren te dejará en la estación de Aguas Calientes, desde aquí puedes subir a la cima de la montaña, donde se encuentra la Ciudadela de Machu Picchu, de dos formas: la primera es caminando, considera que es más ó menos 1 hora de subida approx (esto depende de cada persona) y la otra es el bus de Consettur puedes comprar el pasaje ida y vuelta o solo un tramo

6. Asegúrate de ver la hora en la que llegas a Poroy - Cusco o a Ollantaytambo para que contrates algún tipo de movilidad que te recoja de la estación que puede ser el mismo taxi que te llevó.

There is a BCP bank with ATM in Prospero St., a few meters from the “Plaza de Armas” (Main Square). Moneychangers can also be found along Prospero St. but some are more honest than others and caution is advised when dealing with them. 

Climate

Iquitos has abundant rainfall and hot temperatures all year round. Rainfall experiences two peak periods: November to January and March to May, with April typically being the wettest month of the year. The period from June to September typically yields relatively light precipitation.

Hay un banco BCP con cajero automático (ATM) en la calle Próspero, a unos metros de la plaza de armas. Podrá encontrar cambistas de dinero a lo largo de la calle Próspero, pero algunos son más honestos que otros, así que se recomienda tratar con ellos con precaución.

Clima

Lluvioso y caluroso durante todo el año. Las lluvias alcanzan su pico entre los meses de Noviembre a Junio y Marzo a Mayo. Abril suele ser el mes más lluvioso del año. El periodo desde Junio a Septiembre suele ser poco lluvioso.

Climate

The climate is hot and humid at all times. The average annual temperature is 26 °C (79 °F) with the months of August and September being the hottest. The rainy season is from October to April.

A common phenomenon known locally as a "surazo" or "friaje" occurs when polar winds blow in from the southern mountainous. The temperature will drop to as low as 8 °C (46 °F) for several days.
